Increased crime near Pittsburgh church has some parishioners fearful to attend

increasedcrimenearchurchPITTSBURGH — The front of a church riddled with bullets has some parishioners fearful to attend service on Sundays.

“These shootings and this killing in our community, they need to cease,” said a concerned parishioner of Pittsburgh’s Good Samaritan Lighthouse Church, who did not want to be identified.

Nearly a dozen bullet hole marks are visible on the front of the church on North Lang Avenue.

“There was an altercation with a basketball game that, at the end of the day, these guys start shooting and this house of worship was riddled with bullets,” said the concerned parishioner.

Channel 11’s Trisha Pittman reported that a young man was hit with one of those bullets earlier this week, but neighbors made it clear they did not want to talk about the incident.

“We need to get on the job and get these young people off the streets and change the culture our country’s growing in,” said the concerned parishioner.

Vaughn told Pittman that the church’s elderly pastor tries to serve the community by offering a food bank, Sunday school, church services and prayer groups.

“And we’re talking about a woman, 83 years old, who has been in ministry for more than about 60 years and she’s doing everything she can to bring light and life to that area and this has been a real devastating experience,” said the concerned parishioner.

Although the church wants to expand its building and community outreach, it’s afraid that increased crime in the area will turn away members and prevent them from reaching that goal, Pittman reported.

The reverend is hoping someone will come forward and help repair the damage that the bullet holes have left.
