Pastor FIRED for attending Rick Ross concert

North Carolina – Pastor Rodney Wills was just about to reach 4 years at Mt. Salem Baptist Church. He is the youngest pastor to be installed at 26 years old and is now the shortest term pastor  in Mt. Salem’s 109 year history. On Saturday, Mt. Salem voted him out for attending a local Rick Ross concert. With a vote of 11 to 3, the 14 deacons met at 11pm Saturday night to discuss and come to a conclusion that they did not need his services anymore.

Rev. Wills arrived to the church the next day for Sunday morning worship service and notice his parking sign taken down and his name removed from the office door. The deacons even asked another minister from the community to officiate the service that morning.

“We cannot have our leader supporting people of this world who are tearing down the kingdom of God.” said Deacon Miles Langley.

According to Deacon Langley, this is not the first time Rev. Wills has attended a concert while pastoring Mt. Salem. 9 months ago the diaconate board met with Rev. Wills when word was given to them that many youth and young adults spotted the pastor at a lil wayne concert.

“We know that many saints will have mixed opinions from our actions, but this is not how we do things here at Mt. Salem. We cannot have a pastor praising the world one minute then praising the Lord the next. Period” said Deacon Langley.

Mt. Salem told that they will have guest ministers preach each week while they move forth with the next step.

Rick Ross recently made nationwide news when he was dropped from Reebok and other endorsements for lyrics advocating rape towards women. “Put Molly all in her Champagne/ She ain’t even know it/ I took her home and I enjoyed that/ She ain’t even know it,” he raps on the track.

  1. This is what happens when folks do not understand the academic, theological, philosophical and practical side of Hip Hop. Salem is a old church with old leadership doing stuff the old way that has nothing to do with scripture.

Most of my friends, who are pastors, would definitely be fired becasue they go to all the concerts.

This brother will be at another church in months or will start his own church and many of the young folks will leave with him watch.

    peep out R.A. Vernon’s story….

    • People In this world want to have their way…but the fellowers of Christ doesn’t have their but Christ. when you go. to those concerts are you going praise yourself or God..there’s no spirit filled man who will even think of going to the club or concerts like Rick Ross. the benchmark of Christianity is not our pastors but the bible. Gods work is too enormous for you to think about about worldly things…my brother theologians read the bible as story book without the interpretation of the holispirit that’s why they dispute the bible. but spirit filled men get wisdom when they read the bible . With this kind of pastors in America, why won’t they sit idle and look whiles the enemy chase Gods word from all America public schools and jobs…JESUS CHRIST IS LORD

    • I love Dr. R.a. Vernon. This just maybe that brothers blessing behind a closed door.

    • Please don’t get it twisted… Dr. RA Vernon is not, nor has not been know to go to Rick Ross concerts. The word Church does not nor will ever endorse sin. R.A. Vernon is strong when it comes to coming out of the world and being separate. Don’t let the free style dress during worship service fool you.

    • From what you are saying, it looks like there shouldn’t be any standards upheld within the Body of Christ. This is a pastor who indeed should be held by a greater standard because he is leading a God’s people. In the post above, it shows that he was already given the church’s standards about where he should and shouldn’t be from the time they heard about him attending a lil wayne concert. He went against what they agreed on. That’s apparent by the fact that he decided to continue pastoring this church after the meeting. This has nothing to do with old people vs young people. This has to do with not bringing a reproach to the local assembly and more imortantly to the name of Christ. Besides that, there is no mention of how young or old the other deacons/elders of that church counsil are. And referencing another pastor’s experience does not make what he he did right and the church’s response wrong despite the success that person may have at a later time.

    • It is NOT christian, stop turning YOUR views into Theology. Stating many don’t understand the practical, theological – just shut up and stop twisting it.

So Rick Ross says – BITCHES in here sucking my di*^ while I’m smoking that good shit Illuminati and the Pastor says YEAH to that and turns around and lays hands? And YOU call that “the old way” NO that is “the RIGHT way” fire him, he is NOT ready to be held responsible.

    • Shirley Caldwell

I agree with many of the comments in part. None of us are perfect. We all do sin and fall short, however we are not to condone sin in anyone. I have much to say but I will make this short. Gal. 6:1 is a scripture God gave me early in my salvation walk. “Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. No individual or group of individuals within a church should have the ultimate power or authority to put a pastor out. If they have that much power, then they can also dictate what he can or cannot preach. This situation should be brought before an overseerer, Bishop, Pralate, Elder, etc. Deacons SHOULD NOT HAVE AUTHORITY OVER PASTORS OR BISHOPS. Pray first for God’s direction and wisdom to handle the situation. Try to reason with the Pastor. Even put it before the church. Everything we do should be done prayerfully, fairly, biblically and in love.

  2. Once again EVERYONE IS JUDGING THIS MAN . It says he went to it ….It did not say he was turn up or getting high . Our Father GOD is the Judge , No ifs, ands, or buts about it . And y’all say you fellow CHRIST . I can’t tell Y’all a bunch of hypocrites. Now if he was getting drunk or anything else then yes I agree with the church , but it DID NOT SAY THAT !!!!!!

    • Mr. Clark please understand this – your PRESENCE at an activity gives just as much endorsement as your PARTICIPATION does.

      • Thank you Will. And I would like to add dont attack people for calling out what they see. Rick Ross raps about everything that God is against. Why would a pastor who is about uplifting the Lord want to support that? Doesnt make sence. Maybe he is not ready. Maybe he is on the fence. Maybe Im on the fence. But Im not trying to lead a church. He has a greater responsibility. I dont understand why this is so hard for some to see. We have to hold one another accountable. Its not judging him but he put himself out there like he was above the worlds desires and obviously he is struggling.

      • Elder Cornell Smith Sr.

        AMEN !!

      • I disagree that presence at an activity gives as much of an endorsement as participation. There are people who sit AT church but still aren’t IN church. They are PRESENT just like everybody else. But still don’t PARTICIPATE like everybody else.

Personally, I don’t know the facts behind this pastor attending these events. So I can’t speak with intelligence on whether or not he should really be fired. I say that because I have a female friend in evangelism right now who USED TO BE in the adult entertainment business. Part of her ministry now is to return to strip clubs and porn conventions to set up her evangelism booth in the effort to save other young ladies from that industry before they miss their chance to get out like she did. I have to admit that I would be uncomfortable having a salvation table at a porn convention right next to the ‘girl-on-girl’ table. But what she is doing is working. And that’s what Jesus intended for us to do. Not sit inside the four walls of the church and judge, but to GO INTO THE WORLD AND SPREAD THE GOSPEL.

Again, maybe this guy was trying to spread the gospel, maybe he wasn’t. But until we find out, how ’bout we stop pointing fingers and pray for him as well as that church?

    • What was the judgement here? We Christians get it all wrong when we read over a scripture. The Word of God does not say “Do not Judge.” Please don’t walk away thinking that or else scripture would be contradicting itself because in another place it tells us that we will judge men and angels. The Word of God told us what to do when it comes to judging. It’s about the manner in which we do it..our attitude and intent of the heart. It tells us what we should do before we judge…not simply “don’t judge” because that would be out of balance and unscriptural. How do we determine between right and wrong without judging and if we have civil issues, why do we go to the court to stand before a JUDGE? Come on people of God. Look at what was said in the post. He was already given a directive from the governing body that he CHOSE to submit himself to. Then he DECIDED to go against what was already established.

      • Elder Cornell Smith Sr.

      • Amen!!!

1 Peter 13Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, 15but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; 16because it is written, “YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.”

Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, in order to prove by you what is that good and pleasing and perfect will of God.

John 15:19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

2 Timothy 4:33 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound[a] teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,

    • Everyone is so quick to say people are judging – how about people are taking a stand and expressing the truth that no one else wants to hear or see. People are so quick to make excuses for the nonsense that goes on in this world. Vulgar rappers are negative, period! They promote bad behavior that is glorified. In my opinion, no one with a sane mind should be going to any of these concerts just because of the nice beats and the mesmerizing show performances without being outraged at the lyrics. It’s no coincidence between the violence in this world and rap. People want to cry so many injustices and protest things that are given high profile attention, instead of protesting and eradicating this rap noise that kill bodies, minds and souls stealthily.

    • So A pastor can “attend a str1p club” as long as he is not “getting high or turning up” right?

  3. The very least the deacons could have done was call the pastor and tell him that he was being fired. To let him come to church and find out that way was cowardly. They should have let him know about the meeting so that he could plead his case, or at the very least know why he was being let go. I’m not condoning his attendance at the concerts, but we don’t know his reasoning for going. However, the deacons were wrong in not telling him of their intentions. Everything done in the name of the Lord is not of the Lord.

  4. Be not conformed..He was warned previously by the board when he went to se LIL Wayne that his actions would not be tolerated. He thumbed his nose and went to another filthy mouthed rapper’s concert anyway. Jesus did not hang out sinners participating in their sin with them. He told them of a better way and their lives were changed. Not because He compromised the truth were they drawn but it was because he was not like them. He loved them but he also made it clear that being born again is the only way to the kingdom. Not being born again plus compromise. This pastor new the church’s stance and the fact that the youth told on him suggest he was not witnessing lol.

  5. I know a lot of older pastors that have been seen at the blues concert

    • Shawn..seeing other pastors at a devil worshipping service where they’re sitting as the board of trustees still does not have anything to do with this particular issue. I understand where you’re coming from but that just detracts from what this man agreed as the pastor that he would or wouldn’t do. Deal with each issue as it comes..not look at someone else and either try to prove that there was nothing wrong or that nothing happened to them. There’s also no need to get into what he did or did not do at the concert. Bottom line is this pastor went against what he gave his word to be and suffered the consequences. I do however agree that the counsel should have contacted him about their decision..but then again it’s what they determined. They are the governing body of that ministry.

  6. I hate when people try to defend things people have no business doing then attack the people who call it as it is. Dont defend whats wrong….stand for whats right. No one is saying the dude should go to hell but he should definetly lose his job. NUFF SAID.

    • Good point. This was clearly about a pattern of behavior. If you think of a church in the business aspect and the Deacons as the Human Resource Managers of that church (in charge of hiring and firing), and God as the Owner Operator then the Managers were left with no other choice when the pattern of behavior continued and the Supervisor persisted in acting against the Owner Operator’s wishes.

  7. I’m sorry but a standard has to be set. I applaud the Deacon Board. We often misinterpret scripture to justify ill-behavior and scream Grace !! When you really understand Grace, it makes us not want to contine willfully sin. As the Father extends His Grace we should realize the depth and magnitude of His love and not want to continue being a misrepresentation. And for those that said Jesus hung out with sinners, “Every sinner that “Followed” Jesus was transformed, healed and set free, A change took place”. We are all going to be known by our fruit. I don’t have the right to judge the world, God does that. But because I’m the righteousness of God I am called to help my brother/sister when they are in error just as they are called to help me. If they are wrong I can tell them they are wrong. Jesus and the Apostle Paul did. Jesus stayed on the disciples, questioning their faith and all. Apostle Paul checked Peter on his behavior in dealing with different people. Judgement is not condemnation. As we rear our children we judge their behavior. We have to stop realizing that judgement is a death sentence. When judgement is done correctly its by the will of God. When Akon brought the accursed thing into the camp what did Joshua have to do for the good of the people? Ok !! Lets take responsibility and accountability for our actions. We have to do better. If we’re real about Christ and being an example a standard has to be set and that’s not religion that’s called decency and order.

  8. The greater issue is not how Pastor Willis was put out, but the question becomes; how did he ever get in? There are some things in life that don’t deserve Biblical explanation. A mixture of youth & a thirst to drink from the cup of the desires that young Pastor Willis sought to fulfill, creates yet another unbalanced mixture of the church & the world romping together in the hay. The interest of the church should never lie in grading or showing anger to a world that has the same option to receive Christ as those who have taken him up on his invitation of life. The call of a Christian leader is to build & perfect the saints through the teaching of the Word & providing a natural blueprint which loudly proclaims that he can walk in what he professes to believe. Even with Mt. Salem, don’t be so hasty to rush out & taste the flavor of the week until you weed through all the pretenders. Ask the Lord to show who, when, where & how, & in the meantime, if your leadership has any God-given ability to guide the ship during this perilous time; drive it well & trust God to send His chosen; not yours.

    • It’s a new day in this modern day Christianity ya’ll. I feel to whom much is given much is required and Dude knew the limitations of his job.. It’s worth noting even the young people probably don’t want to see their Pastor at a Rap concert. I do think the Deacon Board treated him pretty bad.

  9. first of all thats whats wrong with the church and most leaders, rightly dividing the word of God. Rick Ross fruits or music is of the world and as a Pastor, you are called to preach teach reach and be an example to the world as Jesus was bringing people who are in the darkness into the Marvelous light. Rap music and all music that doesn’t lift up the name of jesus falls in the same category, and its called secular music, well what about old school or the temptation. It falls in the same category, its a scripture that says, if you leaventh, you leavenght the hold lumpsum. As a pastor, maybe this was a stronghold area for him and his shortcommings came to light. As believers we have to understand that our sins are covered through Gods grace and mercy. Was he wrong, depending on what his purpose was for being there at the concert. Jesus talked to the samaritan women at the wale and asked for some water, and this was forbididen to do a samaritan women and a jew talking. Only God knows what or why he was there. Jesus life and words were entrusted by the people so when he did the uncoustom things, he was always challenged by the Pharisees or Saducees. Now if this pastor was there to enjoy the concert then he is in wrong standing or maybe he is ignorant of the fact that the music isnt accepted in the christian world. Many pastors and christians listen to secular music or play it in there church and is ignorant to the fact that its of the world-the devil. Ignorant means that you don’t know. So is it judgemental to listen to it in your church or a form of secular music then attending a concert? thats the real question deacons, church is not a place where you should vote.

  10. LOOL the funniest story I’ve heard today so far. But bravo to the Deacons “firing” the pastor, From when he went to a Lil Wayne concert and the Deacons told him about not going to it and he went to a Rick Ross concert, not acceptable. Just like Jamal Bryant taking his daughter to a Beyoncè concert, not acceptable at all

  11. I didn’t even know who Rick Ross was; had to research him. And this is just as far away from this profane rapper this minister of God’s Word should have been. The operative word is “Holiness.” Without “Holiness” no man/woman will see GOD. In other words, it’s holiness or hell (Hebrews 12:14.

To be a minister of God’s word, why does this young man have an issue with God and holiness? He needs counseling, and he needs to decide who he’s going to serve—God or Satan?

I love music and listen to various genres. Rap music is okay, just like other music, as long as it’s not profane, which is against all that is holy. The profanity and negative lyrics about women and sex is horrible! This type of music makes a cleanse soul quiver. A real, born-again, soul would not fit comfortable in such a sinful environment.

The deacons were right in what they did. The young minister sounded a bit arrogant, and arrogance is not a sign of holiness. If he is serious about serving God, then he’d be careful about his associations.

It is sad that this young minister is not the only one. These days, rather than separating themselves, people are wanting to be a Christian and continue to live the way they were before proclaiming the name. This is sad but true, and because of this many are being added to hell daily.

  12. Praise God for His grace and mercy. Jesus is the only one that died for us not man but love covers a multitude of sins and this person needs love my Christians people. please read and reflect JOHN 8: 1-12 be bless and walk in love, for God is love!

    • Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ
      Romans 6:1-11
6 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

  13. When I heard about this debacle I immediately scoured the internet to seek out what the fuss was all about. I admit, I chuckled when I heard about the actions of the governing board of this local church. In my opinion, this whole uproar over a young man/pastor attending a secular concert is ludicrous to say the least. It’s actions and comments from the “Christendom” which caused me to embark on a journey that would later lead me to leave the Christian faith and all other “organized” religion for that matter. Double standards by clergy and parishioners torment the faith which its no wonder there are so many “confused” souls walking the face of this planet!!

I’ve come to realize that this journey called life is an individual journey that from birth we are thrust into. Almost from birth, most of us are introduced and then “aggressively persuaded” to join an “organized” faith/religion which then adds to the distress already associated with this life!! Once we’re a part of a local assembly of faith, we are subjected to public scrutiny, ridicule, chastisement, disciplined among other deplorable self-esteem killers…all in the name of an unseen entity who also chooses to remain silent in the midst of mass chaotic confusion!! We come into this world with a built in moral compass, innately knowing right from wrong but this compass is seared as we sink deeper and deeper into our respective faith(s).

My point is this…we all come into this world alone and we leave alone and during the time we are here no one has the right to cast their will upon another. Everyone on the face of the earth has the right to be free, within their own hearts and minds, and to exercise their beliefs in any manner they wish, as long as doing so does not impinge on the rights of others to do the same. As an enlighten resident of this planet, my message to the young pastor would be to keep his head up and live your life as best you can with as little concern to what people (especially church folk) think of you. Live life to the fullest and continue making a positive impact on the lives of those you come in contact with.

That being said…I bid each reader of this comment Infinite Joy and Peace…I’m out!!!

  15. He should have been dismissed. I thought being sanctified meant being set apart from the world. We are not judging. How can you be apart of something that you are not. It’s like saying I’m not a racist, but I’m going to a KKK rally! Really? You people need to wake up. If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything. We accept way too much. The devil has really crept into the minds of the saints. It’s evident by the reality shows and productions these preachers are into. Woe! God is holding us All accountable.
